How Did You Learn About This Work?

I have always been interested in working with children and teaching them about how to get the most out of their lives.  Sure, most of us don’t think about self-help for kids, but growing up as a child I really struggled because I generally had low self-esteem and felt like sort of an outcast in most circles. And after finishing fashion school my uncle proposed a deal to me to make baby blankets. Fortunately or unfortunately it fell through. But I had prototypes of unique blankets with my inspirational nursery rhymes on them that I began to sell to local kids stores.  They became a huge hit but for me it wasn’t enough. I wanted to offer children more so I began writing children’s books to teach them how to connect to themselves and their inner power.  Soon after I became fascinated with learning about anything and everything that could help me achieve my goals and I got into learning about mind power and for years I tried to find the right way to teach mind power to children but none of the techniques out there resonated with me until I began my research in whole brain education and found this one and now I really feel like I found my calling.

What kind of work did you do before you got into this?

I grew up Calgary, Alberta and after University I moved to Vancouver. There I began a journey of self-discovery which led me to becoming a Life/Business Coach, a Bodytalk Practitioner, a Hypnotherapist, a Confidence Coach and an Entrepreneur with big dreams to change the lives of children just because of my own experience as a child.  You know they say that you always teach what you need to learn the most. Perhaps that is why I love working and connecting with children because I am still a child at heart.

What do you love the most about the work that you do?

My greatest joy is to see a child’s face light up when they get that “AH HAH!” It could be when they feel elated by the positive words I share with them about how incredible they are, or when I tell them what they can achieve if they trust themselves and train their mind, or when I teach them how powerful they are by sharing simple confidence building techniques. But what I love the most is when they come to my course and I tell them that they will learn to see with a blindfold on and although they are curious, most are very weary of the possibility, and then….just when they least expect it, they can see and the expression on their faces is simply priceless. That is truly a blessing.

What would you say has been your greatest success?

Well, I have a couple that come to mind and interestingly both are with children who were diagnosed with ADD.  The first one was a from a mother who was really struggling with her son who was also struggling at school and she sort of came to me and participated in the program as a last resort and the day after it was over, she called me and said my son was like a new child at school and there was a huge transformation.  And the other story was of a set of twins who were 6 years of age who also had similar issues.  I remember the parents brought them to me along with their older sister and said we will understand if you tell us that you don’t want us to bring the twins tomorrow.  I didn’t quite understand what they meant and nor did they want to get into too much detail so I welcomed them and let the parents go.  When they came that afternoon to fetch the girls, I showed them the girls new blindfold skills.  They were AMAZED to say the least.  Then they told me that both the girls’ play therapist and teacher said that they were unteachable and how did I manage to do it.  For them it was nothing short of a miracle.

As a parent yourself, has your work made a difference in your kids?

I think I’m the luckiest person to be a parent and do what I do because I experiment everything I want to do with my own kids first.  And it has paid off.  I always have fantastic comments from the parent teacher interviews about how well and how smart my children are…which sometimes makes me wonder if they are in fact talking about my children or someone else’s because by no means are my kids perfect at home.  Far from it! But I teach them all the techniques as well as any new ones that I discover and some give fantastic results right away and others take more time to sink in but it is a learning process as I think parenting is and I make some interesting discoveries about them and myself every day! :)

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Work is not work for me. I love what I do and I could do it all the time.  But something that I love outside of this work is food and cooking.  I could spend hours looking through recipe books, trying new interesting restaurants and cooking all sorts of elaborate meals.  Unfortunately my husband doesn’t share the same palate as me.  But my plan is to slowly convert him. Shhhhh…

I also love watching my kids play and spending moments talking to them and learning about them and their perspectives on the world. I find them so fascinating.

What are your pet peeves?

Dishonesty, even in small things.

People ignoring emails or messages that you send them especially on What’s App.

Hypocrisy. It drives me absolutely mad.

And one thing I really dislike is when people don’t take care in their work especially if it affects me.  For example I remember I went to a Subway one time and the lady at the counter making the sandwich just threw everything onto that bread like it was her miserable sorry life that she was dumping into my sandwich and then wrapped it up for me without any expression on her face.  Soooo unappetizing!

What are some things about you that hardly anyone else knows?

Hmmm, I WILL NOT drink tea or coffee in mugs or cups that are black or dark on the inside.

I talk to myself alot

I’m in love with sunglasses

I get emotional very very very easily

I always dreamed of being on the Oprah Show and would talk to myself as if I was being interviewed by her on many different occasions and I was quite devastated when she ended her daytime talk show.

I always knew that someday I would be famous. :)

I love to find bargains whether it is clothing, food, or travel.  I will spend hours on a computer searching for a bargain and sometimes if I buy something and it goes on sale, I will return and buy it again at the sale price.

I have trouble with Ebay auctions because I get obsessed with winning and even if I’m on a different time zone I will stay up till the last minute to try to outbid the highest bidder.  I get a huge adrenaline rush.

Little things I’m working on improving about myself:

Reprogramming my mind with what I want my life to look like through self-hypnosis.

Exercising regularly

Learning something new everyday.

Drink more water, eat more vegetables, and less sugar in my diet.

What are some of your favorite places in the world?

I’m totally a big city girl.  I love Hong Kong and would probably move there if I could even for a year.

London is another favorite

I also love California and the whole vibe. Santa Barbara, is especially gorgeous and so quaint

What are the strongest convictions that you hold?

Hmmm… that’s a dangerous question… but here goes…

BELIEF #1: This wasn’t always the case but I truly believe we can achieve anything if we have a strong belief, confidence and the right mind set.  And now after knowing what I know about the brain, we can create all of those things in the mind to take us way beyond our wildest dreams.

BELIEF #2: I feel it is really important for people to walk in other people’s shoes before you make a judgement or take a decision on their situation.  Compassion and understanding to me are really important aspects of a person. When you can see something from all angles and feel it from another’s perspective, only then can you make a truly informed decision. .

BELIEF #3: I believe that we don’t give our children enough credit.  Kids are incredible and have the ability to learn and become way more than we could possibly imagine.  And I know that if I can just figure out the best way to convince parents of that, we will work together to create super strong leaders for the future.

BELIEF #4:  People don’t place enough importance on themselves.  Our whole society is based on listening to everything outside of us from respecting authority figures, to choosing suitable behaviors that will lead to acceptance and approval, to making decisions based on the opinions or expectations of others, and frankly speaking, we have lost ourselves.  We are continuously running a rat race and teaching our kids to do the same.  What is the point of being born, if we are always chasing other people’s dreams?  That’s why I am doing what I’m doing.  I want children to see their potential and their amazingness.  I want them to learn to listen to themselves rather than the outside world and I want them to become who they are really meant to be because the world needs them just as they are.
